We just imported our vehicle an it does have to go to the border. Our broker was Guillermo Gonzalez with International Border Solutions. He made it quick (about a week) and simple (he was very helpful). Most of the cost was the IVA and it was quicker (same day) to get it into Mexico than it was to export it from the US. If you send your title to the broker ahead of time (we used UPS), the exportation paperwork can be done while you are driving the vehicle to Dan Diego and the exportation/importation can be done in 3-4 days, excluding weekends, after the car is in the US You will need to pass a smog test (don't laugh) prior to the vehicle being given to Mexican Customs and it must be done at a Mexican certified testing center but it about half the price of Calif smog test. Once the exportation paperwork was done and accepted by Mexican Customs, we turned our vehicle over to the broker in San Diego at 1:00 pm (completely empty) and picked it up, all imported, at 3:00 pm the following day. We checked into a hotel in Tijuana near the Otay Mesa crossing and called a cab to get our vehicle when it was ready. You must drive your vehicle to La Paz, if you live here, to register it so that it is completely legal....and no, you do not need a temporary permit to drive it down the Baja. Simply tape a copy of the importation paperwork to your back window until you get to La Paz. A word of warning.....you cannot drive the vehicle in the US until it is properly registered in La Paz. You can contact Guillermo at 619-661-0226 in San Diego or by email at ggibs@nethere.com

The company that we used was International Border Solutions, they are out of San Diego, but well connected with the Aduana here in Mexico. The President of the company is Guillermo Gonzalez, speaks great English and obviously Spanish as well. His contact information is below:

BWO wrote:Exchanging Your Car For Any Good Or Service? Or Selling It - ANAPROMEX handle thousands of cases where Mexicans owns and drives an american car here in Baja that is not imported yet. Represent them against the federal goverment, pushing and requiring a massive imports program, reasonable taxes are paid and the vehicle is now legal. So if you have to sell your American car. Make sure that the new owner joins to ANAPROMEX so he can drive all over the Baja without problems while the vehicle is regularized. Give me the oportunity to help. Free advice. Re: nationalize a car discussion
for an alternative to nationalizing a vehicle... (I keep mine plated in Montana myself, lifetime plates for onetime fee (i paid $200.00 ten years ago) and no USA insurance required if vehicle is in mexico) many people use south dakota, i have links to that on this forum elsewhere.

Re: nationalize a car discussion
c. Car Importing: Car Impounds: Disconcerting as it is, I can confirm things are heating up as far as Foreigners with visas/perm residents/ dual citizens driving cars with foreign license plates..... I received two calls regarding importing calls yesterday. Although it is not in my area of expertise- business, my girlfriend's family in Tijuana has been importing cars for the last 40 years. They have an "Agencia Aduanal" importing agency and I have worked with them for years. Yes, you have to present your car at the border, but the process is relatively easy and the family could not be nicer, or more professional. If anyone has any questions regarding the process, please fell free to contact me. Am here in Los Barriles and would be happy to clarify concerns, and put you in contact with them if you wish.
