requirements for coming to Mexico with Pets

The federal government recently introduced a new “Frequent Traveler Program for Pets” that aims to simplify and speed up the entry process to Mexico for pet owners at a select number of airports.

Once dog or cat owners have registered their animals in the program, agriculture sanitation authority Senasica will issue an official entry document for each pet.



The registration requirements include filling out an application, attaching a health certificate issued by a Senasica authorized vet and providing records of a current rabies vaccination and treatment against ectoparasites and endoparasites.

The new program eliminates the previous requirement to have a new health certificate for each entry in a six-month period and owners will not have to wait for an import certificate to be prepared when entering the country. Instead, it will be sent via email.

Introduction of the scheme also means that vaccinations and treatments of pets can be minimized and owners will not have to register data about their pets on each arrival because it will already be in the Senasica system. Instead, Senasica staff will simply check to ensure that the vaccinations are still current.


The “Registro de Ingreso” document can be obtained at Agricultural Sanitation Inspection offices located at airports in Cancún, Guadalajara, Querétaro, Zihuatanejo, Toluca and Mazatlán.

Applications can also be made in both terminals of the Mexico City International Airport and at the Senasica central offices, also in Mexico City. The program is free.

The program is limited to travelers and their pets arriving at the same airports where the registration applications can be lodged.

According to a recent survey by travel company booking.com, the introduction of the new frequent traveler program for pets at the Mexico City airport was a key factor in its clients selecting the Mexican capital as the best destination in Latin America to travel to with their animal companions.

Growling, snapping or barking and he'll have to stay in the crate. Our dog just sleeps, the motion of the plane is comforting. It's also best not to feed the pup before traveling, -12 prior to flight. Being a Little hungry and thirsty is better than a accident.

You need to get the proper papers in to Mexico an out of Mexico.
Go to a vet their in Mexico they will give you the proper papers to travel. It shouldn’t be More then $25.00.

b. Thank you to the person posting information your pet to Mexico: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel/by-country/pettravel-mexico . The web site provides two options. The Option A form is what my vet has used in the past. That form doesn’t guarantee the pet has been treated for fleas and worms in the last 6 months. However, I have read on the ‘Talk Baja” Facebook pages that people have been held at airports in Mx because their paperwork didn’t have the information Option B includes which does address being treated for fleas and worms in the last 6 months Hopefully, the Option A, USDA Form 7001(2010) is still acceptable.. I’m getting mixed messages and want to do it right! Please, will someone who has recently flown in please let me know what form their vet used? My vet doesn’t want to super-impose the Mexican-originated form (Option B) on his letterhead, understandably.

TRAVELING WITH FIDO and MORRIS:
We flew down with our pets on Alaska Air one week ago. We had Health Certificates and all the required rabies certs. Our Vet read the rules and made sure not to use any abbreviations on the Certificates. The problem we had was when we checked in, the airline required us to get revised Health Certs faxed to them with the following included on the Cert: “the dog has been treated for worms inside and out”. Make sure to have copies, because the agent in Mexico kept our Health Certificates.

He said Mexico is requiring more documentation on parasites because of a parasite originating in Florida that is infecting the Cattle. To summarize the rabies shot must be given at least 30 days before the travel date. The cat will also require at least one vaccination the vet should be familiar with all the requirements.
The person will have to book the cat on her air flight to make sure she can travel on the airline with them I hope this will answer any questions but if you have any more please let me know. Cheers shawn

Robert, I used a company called pet passports. They are located in Florida, so the time difference can be a challenge sometimes.
