LPG

I´m sure many of you do not know this. Many of the people who live in the colonias where we work do recycling in the dumps. There are places where they sell the plastic, glass, metal, other materials. Paper is used to make piñatas. So those things that are not recycled before your garbage men pick up your garbage will be recycled once they get to the dumps.

When I say the colonias where we work, I am referring to the Colonias Marquez de Leon, Laguna Azul, Villas de Guadalupe, Vista Hermosa, where Fundacion Ayuda Niños La Paz operates a dining room and library. Barbara Spencer also operates a breakfast program in Vista Hermosa.

Times are hard for the people out there now, much more so with the crisis that has hit everyone. They collect everything that is mentioned below. They are going to be taught how to make compost so they´ll also be able to use some of the organic stuff.

>Believe it or not, there is recycleing in La Paz. 2 ladies run a center from their house and they take everything from old clothes and rags to glass, plastic, metal, paper etc. Go south on the Malacon to Cinco de Febrio. Go left and go up to the McDonalds. Take a right at the light on Felix Ortega and go 3 blocks where it merges with Olachea. Take the 1st left on Nayarit and then the 1st right. It's on the left and usually has a big trailer out front. Usually there is no one there, so I just put my plastic bags of stuff in the pile out front. I think they take pretty much everything except organic and they separate everything.

The recycling place that Tanya mentioned is at the bottom of Sinaloa (not Sonora). When you get to the beach, follow the road around (to the left) until you get to a gate with a security guard and tell him you're there for recycling. There are huge bins for glass, tins, plastics, paper, and cardboard. They also take compost. If no one is there to take the compost off your hands, leave it on one of the tables. The money from the recycling goes to a soccer team for uniforms etc. Barbara

Batteries update with translation for your/our neighbors:

All batteries are very toxic to humans and the new landfill is basically over our water system. Reverse osmosis does not remove these chemicals that can be absorbed even while taking a shower.
Battery recycling: The program is officially being sponsored by crazy pacos.. Paco has agreed to be in charge of all dead batteries, and he has received a significant number of batteries so the program is working. Bring him dead batteries of any kind from rechargeable, like cell phone batteries, tooth brush, flashlights, garden lights, tools, any kind of device that was rechargeable. Please cut the tooth brush open and remove yourself, but if you cannot do it we will still take it and do it ourselves. This includes hearing aid batteries, toy, regular dry cell, alarm and we will also take car truck, motorcycle, atv and any one you can imagine. Any batteries that show signs of leakage, please put them in a double plastic bag sealed. And also separate the rechargeable ones from the non rechargeable ones.

Still running as a special incentive for you to get the ones from your neighbors and also include for the hassle of explaining to your friend who does not speak English, for every 10 batteries you bring to Paco he will give you a 10% discount on a cup of coffee.. Crazy Paco’s hours as of this notice at the coffee shop and for taking batteries is 7am to 2pm 7 days a week. Please do not drop off batteries when he is closed.

Paco will be looking into collecting all dead florescent lamps and what can be done with these. So please do not throw these away for now, hold onto them to see what we can do with them, these contain mercury that could end up in our water too. Paco 114-0202 if you have a question.

Below is a translation for your (our) neighbors in town. Please print this and give it out. Also our local doctor has agreed to put in a little extra time and talk to the local elected officials regarding this and several other issues like we are noticing more garbage on the side of the roads and again the screens on septic tanks to prevent mosquito breeding should we have significant rains in the future. As we know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, if we do our part we can minimize the problem.. Very nice of our Doctor Ponce to help us.

In the below translation/offer you will also be asking them to give you their batteries and you will bring them to Crazy Pacos.
Thanks Dean
