if you want wifi in your house but do not have a phone line here is a way. It is not cheap as it is by your data downloading, so if your download movies will be expensive. but for email web surfing cheap/reasonable. Basically if a telcel cell phone works these will work. Plans are from 500mb to 30 Gb.

***** you will want to turn off software upgrades and at least once a month go to an internet cafe to prevent large downloads.

I have discovered a Wireless Internet extender that is compatible with the 2Wire 2701 series router; that is most commonly used router in our area of Mexico. So what does that mean, great question and I'm glad you asked. If you have difficulty receiving a WiFi signal in the far reaches of your home, that means you have a couple cement walls with either rebar or metal mesh. Both will greatly reduce how far your WiFi signal will carry. If you are trying to tap into your neighbors WiFi (with permission of course), an Extender will help that one bar signal jump to 4 bars. The problem with most extenders is finding one that is compatible with the chip set in the main router (2Wire 2701). Follow the installation instructions closely and you can easily pump up a signal across 100' and through two walls. The unit is not certified for exterior use, but it doesn't rain much here and you can protect it from the sun. I finally have an Internet Security Camera up and running, Foscam F18918w. I can view and control the camera from anywhere in the world from my computer, Ipad or Android phone. It could be used outdoors in a very protected area. If you're a geek, you can get the Foscam up and running. For the faint of heart, I have ordered a camera from "dropcam.com". The company promises an easy two minute setup and that it will work from a Mexican IP address. The DropCam is for indoor use, I intend to set it in a window. I will report on the Drop Cam as soon as it arrives.

In regards to the wireless internet range. First if you have the old 2 wire modem do not get rid of it. These are very good but you have to set the power rating by typing in the following in the browser. http://192.168.1.254/ Then get to the wireless settings and move the power from 5 to 10. If you have other modems you can check the same thing, but most are not adjustable. If that does not do it, go to Telmex and buy a repeater. Repeaters are 300 pesos and they have them in stock right now, they need to be plugged into a standard ac outlet. These are good for adding about 40 feet to the range and up to 100 feet depending on obstructions. They are simple to install, famous last words. They can be cascaded (buy a bunch of them) for longer distance. Dean 114-0202 dean@la-ventana.com

Coming back to Baja and your Internet does not work?
Most internet customers take their DSL router to a Telmex office where they change your equipment for a new model of DSL, telling you that it has a better performance, ect, then you still having trouble connecting to www with wireless, because they gave you a Router with ‘factory settings’, without setup a correct Wi-Fi channel.
Advice:
*You can avoid this trouble just changing the power cord to the OLD one, ask your property manager, they may have spare power cords that you can use (used or new from another box).
*If you already changed the router for anew one, you need to open your internet browser to type 192.168.1.254, this will show a window asking for the USER and password, the user is TELMEX with capitols and the password is your own WEP-KEY –located on a sticker below your DSLrouter-, then you will be able to see that your wireless settings are in AUTO, please select a FIXED wireless channel (I use the number 6).

Here in LaVentana, only telcel works here. ATT is the same frequency for cell phones. I have a ATT pay as you go phone that is great here, the go phone plan.

Telcel sells a USB wireless wifi device that costs about $40.00 and has pay as you go plans. It works with skype. You will need you passport and generally 2-3 trips to LaPaz to get it working when brand new..

If you are just getting your email it is very reasonable to use. Maybe $20.00 to $40.00 a month. If you are surfing and downloading a lot just remember Carlos Slim the owner of telcel and Telmex is the worlds richest person. Just like regular internet we pay about $50.00 a month for a landline for what in the USA we would pay about $20.00 a month for and in usa you have 2-3 times the speed. Point being the wifi card the usage price will be about 2-3 times by US costs with competition.

So expect if you are using such a wireless card for a little to a lot of skype, to be $100.00-$200.00 a month. just keep it to email and no downloading of movies, no skyping or streaming of music and it will be reasonable.
