I do not recommend the major rental agencies.  If they are overbooked they will play the game of extortion.

in LaVentana there is one guy who does rentals and you can drop the car at the airport with about one days notice to rent the car.   He is next to the Vet north of OXXO.

also, I have listed under travel at the bottom of the home page then by air,  an insurance company that does write renters car insurance policies.     It pays off if you are renting for about 10 days or more.    http://la-ventana.forumotion.com/t139-car-rental

and note the cdw issue is tricky with credit cards, i have two bank of america credit cards and one does cover Mexico and one does not and it was very difficult to get that answer, took a month to get the copy of the agreement.
